Student Reflections – Jonas – Chun Yang Pai
Many departures, many returns. Time ticked by… Our learning brains and bodies, with this light, now brightly burn.
There are many stories I could share, but too much to just digitally lay bare. My time in the temple was amazing, difficult and rich with understandings, lessons and perspective. The training was intense and constant, often rest days involved gardening, carrying wood, clearing trails, and carrying food up the mountain. This helps to accomplish all the necessary task needed to maintain the temple, but, also builds Gong by not letting one’s body become slack. My fellow students and the residents there were all interesting and great. We had fun, banged heads, sweated hard and many great conversations were had. There were people from several countries and different backgrounds so many thoughts and views were had. There was and endless array of insects and animals and plants to observe. Medicine was harvested and made into balls, steeped in alcohol or decocted, healing song and breath and touch were learned. Tending the altars, mantras, ceremony, meditation, alchemy theories and other methods were learned. Qi emission, talismans and healing gong. So much… So much! And not to forget the Gongfu… Whew.. The GongFu! Gong cultivation is the foundation of the teachings and the training is Wowsers! Li Shifu is a great man and a true human. A no B.S. kind of guy. He sees far and plays a mean game of chess (I could never win!) He is funny, but strict and gentle when he sees your body, mental facades or pretenses crack so that one can learn to bend or have life slap back. I am grateful to have been led to BaiMa Shan and the Five Immortals Temple. I am glad that this place is carrying forward in traditional training and the traditions of Taoist life. I hope it will continue to thrive in its Way. I am thankful for the dedication of the teachers and I hope we as disciples, can carry the traditions forward, honor and share them so that this lineage and ancient methods of being, healing and martial arts will be preserved. The Chun Yang lineage is unique and very old, and luckily, Li Shifu is here to share his knowledge of the nearly lost Chun Yang Pai method’s of self improvement, Gongfu and spiritual cultivation. The Five Immortals Temple, Bai Ma Mountain is likely the last place to live and learn in this way, Bai Ma mountain is beautiful and the old temple is a sight to see and feel, you can still feel what it once was to live in the way of the old path, it is still a place of wonder.
