Dragon Gate: Law of the Heart

CHAPTER #6

HUMILITY

The greatest illness of people who cultivate is the poison of anger. This anger isn’t defined by oneself, but by others. The six desires and seven emotions are all contained within the single word “anger”. The thousand transgressions and ten thousand errors all arise from anger. It  is an evil fire of delusion. It is the central of the three poisons. Internally, one scorches oneself, outwardly others are burnt. If one takes it as a spiritual basis they are incinerated life after life. If they use it as a means for meditation they are scorched by it life after life. The six organs are unable to regulate harmoniously and the five viscera are unable to be tranquil.

Hearing oneself being cursed at by others, anger rises from the heart. Fire grows in the liver, and becomes a blazing inferno, taking the ears of a person who can listen and hear and abruptly closing and stopping their aperture, making them into a deaf person.

Seeing oneself being insulted by others, anger rises from the heart, fire grows in the kidneys, becomes a blazing inferno, and takes eyes of a person who can see and watch abruptly closes and stops that aperture, making them into a blind person.

It is only because ears hear and eyes see that when angry words are spoken the fire rises from the heart. The Qi of the gall bladder grows, (the qi from the gall bladder is associated with anger), and one gives regard to neither the deities of heaven and earth above them, nor to the judgments and laws of man in their midst. Wishing to get a word in, to curse another person, if only just half a sentence to disgrace them, one’s heart speeds and they cannot keep from losing themselves. A person whose tongue can speak and talk is taken and their ability is closed and stopped, and they become a mute person.

This deaf person without ears, though they may have the five tones and six pitches, as well as songs, rhythm and melody, still cannot appreciate them. If they give scorn and abuse like lightning and ridicule as a drum beat, they themselves are affected. From this their spiritual base is extinguished and how then are they different than a simple animal?

This blind person without eyes, though there may be five colors and bright light, golden and azure light, they cannot appreciate them. When they are confronted with something bewitching, as beautiful as a flower, they will be deceived and disgraced; manipulated as a puppet. They themselves are affected by this. From it their spiritual base is extinguished and how is that different than a living hell?

The mute person is without words, though they have a thousand worries and ten thousand hardships; grievances which they lay before others. Their hundreds of thoughts and thousands of plans cannot be spit forth from their mouth. Those who have only action but no understanding will endure hardship, sickness, difficulty and confusion. Their mothers, fathers, wives and children cannot know what plans remain in their chests. They are the disabled; they write voraciously but in the end they cannot awaken. Others loathe them and they are ashamed of themselves, they are like the birds of the sky or beasts of the field. From where does this affliction arise?

From where does the root of this disease come? From not being able to settle the anger in one’s heart, from not being able to endure humiliation. The people in this world have bodies formed of blood and qi. The root of anger predates any calamity and has passed itself down, this sin of ignorance, causing hearts to be happy when events are in our favor. Without understanding it, happiness becomes an enemy. When situations become unfavorable, anger grows in the heart, which unknowingly is the root of calamity.

Everyone, you have all already renounced, in order to understand life and death. If the root of anger isn’t severed, this poisonous dragon will invade the root of heaven.  If one wishes to transcend this world, the cause of their nature and life, and the root of anger hasn’t been extinguished, this vicious beast roars into the cave of the moon. Sexual desire becomes the poison dragon; resentment becomes the fire of hatred, which burns up the body. Life becomes a fierce tiger, which creates poisonous qi that conceals all so that truth is lost. Life and death is misunderstood all because of the gravity of hatred. If one’s nature and life isn’t upright it is because the fire is strong. If the six roots cannot be dealt with and the five senses cannot be used, it is all because anger has not been eradicated from the heart.

If one desires to eradicate the root of anger first they must put an end to their sinister ideation. Everyone, what is a sinister ideation? Humility un-endured is called a sinister ideation. If one day a heart is filled with evil intentions than for that day one remains evil, and how can an evil person enter the Way? Everyone, people who cannot maintain humility, whose hearts cannot be subdued, are just like poisonous dragons and fierce tigers that can only chastise others but never abase themselves. They are always being competitive and putting themselves above others, competing for fame and profit and making themselves seem heroic for fame and honor. Seeking the warm-heartedness of all people they do not know how to save people and thereby can only be killing them.

In the guise of broadening one’s knowledge they engage in deception of others, not realizing the harm they incur, a type of self harm. All living things are confused and thereby unable to awaken, never considering the long term, one’s own family is as if dead, in the end this is harmful to oneself. Everyone, if you go out to shame others, that intention will come back around and others will take advantage of you. Their heart and your heart are codependent; if you disgrace another they will thereby disgrace you. Everyone, this words “disgrace,” how broad it is! Like a wanton man’s wife, who is well in spite of her disgraceful husband, her disgraceful son, her disgraceful ancestors and her disgraceful clan. If another man is lustful after your wife anger is born and a great evil arises. Thinking of how this man lusts after my wife, how does this affect my credibility? If others hear about it not only will there be humiliation, but the standard that holds a family together and the virtuous nature of one’s ancestors are violated so how can I allow him to get away with this?

One wants to grab a knife or a spear, the fires of enmity are lit and murderous ideation arises. If I am disgraced by another man and this is the consequence, if I disgrace him back what consequence will that bring? If a wife meets with adultery in this life it is certain that there was a cause of this in her past lives. If in a previous incarnation a man rapes another man’s wife, in this life he will be a woman who gets raped.  This is the human reality of every cause having an effect.  Everybody, listen to these words, never allow a wanton heart to arise. I’m telling everyone, this life which we all share exists because of lustful desire. If sexual desire isn’t overcome, than the root of life and death cannot be broken. Because of sexual desire the physical form is created, if one desires to transcend the physical body one must eradicated sexual desire. If sexual desire is eradicated, the spiritual body grows and is born from inside the physical body and only then can one transcend life and death.  This is my spoken truth, to treat it as idle chatter is a great mistake.

Those closest to the precepts, in ordinary times were mostly people who followed the Way. There was a monk who went about it despite the consequences of begging food in a small bowls. One day he walked meter by meter he passed by a shop. The shopkeeper had joy in his heart and asked the monk to come inside and sit. He bowed and offered the monk some vegetarian fare. He parted with a silver piece as he threw it into the begging bowl. While he was tending the kitchen, the shopkeeper had forgotten to attend to his wife, who came out onto the veranda. The monk and the mans’ wife saw each other before she was able to withdraw. He thanked the man for his food and donation and left. At night while meditating, his thoughts ran away to this man’s wife, recreating her face. As soon as this thought arose he immediately subdued it and lay in repentance. Immediately in a dream he saw the death of his body and the reentrance into the world from a fetus. The boy grows to be a man who takes a wife of the utmost beauty. One day the man goes out and bumps into a Taoist begging for food along the road. He’s won over with joy, and invites the Taoist back to their home to bow and make offerings, when his wife emerges from the veranda. After this experience he makes many offerings. One day he comes home to find the Taoist in his room making a forceful advance on his wife who hasn’t consented. The man is being is insistent. Her heart sees his anger so she grabs a hatchet and kills the Taoist. The monk suddenly awoke from his dream with anger in his heart and felt aggrieved. He wrote down a description of the wife whom the Taoist had lusted after in his dream. That day he saw the shopkeepers wife, who looked just like the wife of the man he’d become in his dream. His whole body began to perspire, he immediately turned to his heart and repented.

Everyone, look how this disciple begins to learn some skills. Even with strong vows, without the power of determination what he sees during the day turns to the fantasy of his nighttime dreams. When fantasy is active, dreaming becomes a mirror; a mirror which reflects the present with clear judgement.  Everyone, lust of fantasy alone cannot be fixed in dreaming, let alone committing adulterous acts in the flesh. In the next life how can this not resurface?

Be like a person who cultivates; don’t entertain the inception of fantasy to ensure it is never created, endure humiliation so the heart isn’t hidden within, when struck don’t return a punch, when cursed at they don’t yell back, accept fault and don’t look at others as being in the wrong. There was a man walking along the road with a stick. A mule approached him and as he stepped out of the way to make way for the it, the mule pushed him out of the way with its head, knocking him backwards to the ground it tore at his sleeve with it’s mouth, leaving his clothes in tatters. This man, while sitting that night, had an awakening, realizing that in his distant past he had been a mule who had been was brought to slaughter and returned to the world as a man,. The butcher who did the slaughter reemerged in the world in a mule’s body. So, if my life ends with slaughter, in my next life I will become a butcher, the result will be me slaughtering cows. Seeing this one can change ways, through repentance in the three realms and return in a human form.

This donkey, in it’s past, had the misfortune of being a butcher of cows. The reason for its anger was that in the man’s past life he had peeled the skin off cows to make leather, therefore the mule rent the man’s clothes. When anger is dispelled through having this realization, one sees their own body as that of the cow, the donkey becomes a human whose skin is being flayed, and enduring so much pain it’s heart is filled with thoughts of retaliation.

Everyone, you all must use the blade of precept, with its luminous edge, to kill only yourself, never others. Wrap your body in endurance like armor, to meet people who are as scornful and berating as the punishments  dictated by the laws of kings, or the disputes of the government, who are as calamitous as lightning sparking a fire or the flooding of water, as the wolf and the tigers bite, as insects destroy and diseases poison; to meet them when they speak sideways with evil language, emit slanderous words from evil mouths which ruin reputations, destroy objects and cut apart bodies. When your life is thus assaulted, always connect to your intention and determination to be free from this suffering.  Only a peaceful mind can support it, following heaven and joining the Dao, repaying debts, creating no more the intention of grumbling in anger. Generate the idea to not submit.

For the time being, think back. I’ve enduring his deceit, but in the end I’ve deceived him; by enduring his trap, I’ve trapped him. Meeting with the punishment and misfortune, with the fire and disaster that all come before birth, one must endure their own actions. Despite having committed evils, when one seeks to dissipate them, the six desires naturally do not arise, the three poisons disappear, the body and heart are light and healthy. The emotions and temper are calm and peaceful. Anxiety has been leveled, enmity has been reconciled. From time immemorial to this day there is a debt of injustice in this world, a debt only paid through willingness to subdue oneself for the benefit of others. With the purpose of liberation, seek eternal refuge in peace and stillness, where nothing is created and nothing destroyed, perfection of life. Otherwise the ancient debt cannot never repaid, the humiliations of this life will not permit it, the retaliations of the afterlife naturally cannot free you. How can this body achieve deliverance, how can this heart achieve emptiness, how can this Way achieve cultivation? Being unable to endure even a few scornful words, how true liberating peace be attained in just the time between birth and death?

Everyone, enduring this anger, the fire will be extinguished; the five organs will become still and pure. Endure the flowering pond of life and the six viscera naturally become harmonious. Endure the satisfaction of heart and naturally repentance will bring back peace. Endure your capacity to forgive, and your vision will naturally broaden. When I am humiliated, I do not see it as shameful; humiliation will find its way back from whence it came. People who disgrace others, whose humiliations are endured, thereby bear humiliation themselves. By tolerating disgrace one’s heart is calm and energy is peaceful, the fire of the liver doesn’t grow and one is magnificently rescued from bitterness.  Enduring humiliation makes mind and spirit benevolent, becoming like the Southern Dipper which prevents calamity. By tolerating disgrace the fluids of the lungs don’t dry up, but become the “Jasper Lake” of sweet dew (甘露). By tolerating disgrace the essence of the kidneys isn’t wasted and it becomes a spiritual spring within an ocean of energy. By tolerating disgrace the soils of the spleen aren’t dried up, and become a healthy energy of five elements. By tolerating disgrace the spiritual body doesn’t leak, and it becomes a wonderful and dignified body, just and honorable from thereon. For the country to endure it must provide a benefit to the dynasty. For a family to endure it must benefit its constituents, its flesh and bones. For the body to endure, it must serve the vital essence. For the heart to endure it must support life and destiny. For a teaching and religions to endure, they must be subservient to the universal law.  Being able to endure generates this advantage, while being unable to endure hearts aren’t emptied, spirits are unholy, energy isn’t strong, potentials aren’t great, chests don’t open, achievements aren’t complete, cultivations are unfulfilled, sight isn’t penetrating, thoughts aren’t deep, wisdom is small, happiness and virtue are shallow, foundations are weak. One hears of the way without understanding, and finds obstructions when trying to walk the path. One treats others with disrespect and enmity, jealousy, hatred and anxiety. In the dark world are punishing demons, in the light is the universal law. Many traumas of regret and agitation are preserved, and when the next life comes the repercussions are increasingly deep. In the sea of bitterness waves roll as before, in the river of desire breakers still rise. Here is the depravity of entering side doors, unable to surpass devils and demons one’s fate is repeated; unmitigated suffering.

Everyone, if you aren’t willing to endure humiliation, who can do it for you? If you aren’t willing others are even less willing. So won’t there be retribution, life after life, recurring aggression and fighting? Over and again in this world these wrongs are suffered endured by so many bodies, perpetually. Everyone, listen well. In the highest heaven, virtue is your only aid. Isn’t it heard that greatness comes by possessing virtue? Virtue is a foundation, riches are but dust. Look at yourselves in the midst of all life, there is no difference between the wise and foolish; weighing wealth heavily brings immorality and weighing virtue heavily detaches one from the burdens of wealth. Striving for riches is a phase of the inability to endure humiliation. Sexuality follows the exact same principle.

If riches cannot be neglected one plays the same role and behaves as always with nothing changing. Sacrifice riches to support others, view gain as no gain, stay calm through loss and humiliation, don’t lose any virtue, peacefully endure decrease while not seeking to hurt others. Doing harm creates harm and more negativity as well. Releasing riches opens the heavens. Look beyond the pivot of covetousness, do not arise anger in the heart, continually repel it, do not argue and see through the emptiness of lust. Endure everything, persevere through it all, don’t let glory bring happiness, nor disgrace arouse anger, Hold no stock in any sound, smell, taste or touch, nor in any eye, ear, nose, tongue, body or intention, not in any mountain river or the earth itself, not in any plant, tree or insect. Foster this in your heart and as wisdom puts forth a light the dharma body is completed. The achievement of enduring disgrace is known as subduing. If people can subdue their hearts they become immortals and sages. If they cannot they may become ghosts and demons. The infernal ignorance of this type of person is inextinguishable, scorching and boiling them in the dark underworld, conforming to the single amalgam which is the source of misfortune within the three realms; the disaster of life ignorant of the way, so deeply pitiable.

Everyone, you must hurry to awake, to quickly get rid of ideas of self and others, quickly awaken to the causes of life and death. Endure disgrace; subdue the fires of anger, to see the true body at the center of emptiness. When the seven emotions are extinguished there follows a great fortune which exists in the body and heart. Repay wrongdoings completely, to become a person who exists outside of suffering.
